Syed Mustafa Siraj is a Bengali short story writer and novelist. He wrote around 150 novels and many short stories. He became prominent for his creation of the detective character Cornel.

The main character of Cornel series is Niladri Sarkar. He is an Ex-colonel. After that, he becomes a detective who solves mysteries. Colonel Niladri is an ornithologist and butterfly collector. He is a cheerful person. He has a Santa beard. He also smokes pipe. He likes quoting Bengali proverbs and rhymes. His sidekick is Jayanta who is a journalist.
